The Comstock Cowboys Put on a Fabulous Concert to Help Support Laws Railroad Museum

On June 20, 2009, David John & The Comstock Cowboys performed at Laws Railroad Museam in Bishop. Over 270 people attended the evening show whose proceeds went to support the historic museum. The show was exciting and I am sure the band gained some new fans.

The Comstock Cowboys, who are from Gardnerville, Nevada, will be back in the area on July 25th, where they will be performing in Lone Pine. Click HERE to see the full schedule of this great band.

With the sun setting behind the Laws Depot, the Comstock Cowboys rocked the wonderful evening.

What a Wonderful Year!
Bishop Sunrise Rotary members work on installing bricks during a community service project at Bishop City Park.

How very appropriate it is that June is Rotary Fellowship Month.  As I complete my last month as President, I am reminded of all the great times and outstanding fellowship I have enjoyed during the year.

This past Rotary year has been a wonderful experience and very rewarding.  We can all be very proud of the work we have done in our own community and internationally.

As I reflect back over the year we have had some very memorial experiences:

  • Building and completing the Senior Community Garden ( my pet project)
  • Laying pavers in the City Park on the hottest and smokiest day of the year
  • Learning to make cotton candy for Good Ole Days ( I think we wore most of it)
  • Delivering the Wish Tree presents in snow and sliding down the streets of Bishop
  • Tending to our roses in freezing & over 100 degree temperatures
  • Driving a Bear to Bishop &  Collecting DVD's  for Vets
  • Mardi Gras fundraiser of the year
  • Club involvement in the Career Seminar and Job Fair
  • Inducted new members to bring new talent,  ideas and resources
  • Donated to Polio Plus,  Guatemala Literacy and the Shelterbox
  • Hosting the GSE team from France - sending two RYLA students
  • Grants in support for our community - Coffee Drive

This all takes dedication and gives the true meaning of Rotary - Service Above Self

I would like to thank each and every member, my sincere thank you for your support and help during this year.  We did Make Dreams Real.

To President Elect Don Matthewson, I offer my support and sincerest best wishes for a rewarding and successful year as he prepares to take over as our new president on July 1st where Rotary is in Our Hands.

New City Council Sworn In; Susan Cullen Elected Mayor
City Administrator Rick Pucci swears in the victors of the March 3, 2009 municipal election: (l-r) Treasurer Robert Kimball, new City Council members Laura Smith and David Stottlemyre and returning council member Susan Cullen. From the Inyo Register:
Monday [March 12, 2009] marked a special occasion for the City of Bishop, as it welcomed and swore in new members of the City Council and named a new mayor and mayor pro tem.

This beginning also signaled the end for other council members. Frank Crom retired after more than 40 years of public service and Martin “Smiley” Connolly, who did not win his bid for re-election on March 3, officially vacated the seat he’s held for the past 17 years.

Monday’s meeting was first a lesson on governmental procedure for newly elected council members David Stottlemyre and Laura Smith. For incumbents Susan Cullen and Treasurer Bob Kimball, it was business as usual.

First, the election results were certified and declared by the council, after which the officials were sworn in under the direction of City Administrator Rick Pucci. The new members then took seats at the dais with another chair left empty in the mayoral place.

The selection of a mayor and mayor pro tem is done by the council itself. A council member first selects a candidate for a mayoral position, the council then approves the selection and the council votes on that selection.

Council member Bruce Dishion nominated Susan Cullen for mayor and she was voted in unanimously. Dishion then nominated Jeff Griffiths for mayor pro tem, who was also elected unanimously
